In a move to compete directly with established American online course platforms such as Coursera and edX, the Open University has launched Futurelearn, a UK-based platform for massive open online courses. The platform operates as an independent company, with more than 20 of the best UK and international universities signing on as partners. Martin Bean, vice chancellor of the Open University, noted ahead of FutureLearn's launch that the platform would have a "distinctly British" twist, turning to content from institutions including the BBC, the British Library and the British Museum.
