Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright Program was established in 1946 and provides students, scholars and professionals international graduate study, advanced research and teaching opportunities in more than 155 countries. Its primary funding comes from an annual appropriation from Congress to the Department of State. In 2008, the program awarded approximately 6,000 grants costing more than $275 million. The deadline is typically September or October.
